Du Lac Tanganyika Hotel
A stay of 5 days in Burundi creates a work place for one year.
The hotel club du Lac Tanganyika **** is a enterprise with a strong social impact and it concretely contributes to the growth of the quality of the life in Burundi and in the Region of the Big Lakes.
All the jobs of restructuring have been realized with local labour. A part of the furniture of the rooms has been realized by the prisoners of the jail of Bujumbura as jobs of social reintegration. (I plan in partnership with the Caritas Italiana).
Today, the direction and all the staff of the hotel are original of the Burundi and the Region of the Big Lakes.
The Hotel Club du Lac Tanganyika employs around 120 people.
The Hotel Club is also an echo-compatible project. (mas con menos). All the jobs have been realized respecting the environment the local traditions and using techniques of bio-architecture. Its architecture is characterized by low and articulated volumes, by by the local stone to sight and its straw roof.
The Great Lakes Region and Lake Tanganyika
One of the most fertile areas of Africa, the Great Lakes Region refers to Lake Tanganyika and Kivu – which empty into the Congo River – and Lakes Victoria, Albert and Edward – which empty into the White Nile.
The area includes Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya and Democratic Republic of Congo.
The region is characterized by a high density of population – more than 100 million of inhabitants – and by its altitude which gives it a rather temperate climate despite being right on the equator.
Lake Tanganyika, or “ Etanga’ya’nia”, is a real spring water sea which bathes four countries: Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia and Democratic Republic of Congo. It is the longest lake of the world – 420 mile –, the second deepest – 4710 feet – and 1/5 of the fresh water stock of the planet.
20 millions years old, Lake Tanganyika has a great variety of plants and animals with more than 1200 species. It is not rare to see hippopotamus, crocodiles,…, going for a walk on the beach. There is also a great variety of fish and almost 200 unique cichlid species.
With a high mineral content, the water of Lake Tanganyika is famous for being transparent: it is possible to see 25 m deep. Lake Tanganyika has a sandy bank (white sand) up north, in Burundi, where you can sunbath, relax and swim.
The Lake is also the Hotel Club du Lac Tanganyika’s natural “air conditioner”: during the hottest hours of the day rises a breeze that guarantees natural ventilating and enables the practice of windsurf and sailing everyday.
